National Theatre

Refurbishment of the costumes workshops at The National Theatre on the South Bank, SE1.

This £1.5M scheme across the 5th floor of this iconic listed building included the complete upgrade and reconfiguration of the textiles workshops and fabric dyeing facilities along with improvements to the wigs and props workshops, laundry and staff kitchens/rest areas.

Whilst the workshops were decanted for the duration of the 6-month construction period, the rest of the theatre and back-stage functions remained fully operational throughout; “the show must go on!”

Appointed as principal contractor for the scheme, works involved demolition & stripping-out, replacement polymer floor screeding, carbon fibre reinforced polymer strengthening to openings formed through the roof for new MVHR ventilation to the spaces with both heating and cooling, new partitioning, Lutron lighting, electrical, fire alarm, data, domestic hot & cold water service and heating upgrades, sprinkler alterations, suspended ceilings and all finishes.

The installation of six new electrically heated dye vats to replace original gas- fired vats, along with specialist local extract and supply air ventilation systems, was the at the heart of the project and now provides the NT with a bespoke and state of the art facility
